FCE What you need to know in order to have a positive experience
BEFORE THE EXAM
Find out what you need to know and how much time you need to
prepare or revise.
It is important that you do a couple of practice papers.
You need a good dictionary, a good grammar book and a course
book.
Focus on all aspects of the language, but vary the activities.
Don’t revise before you go to bed. You’d better go for a walk,
have a bath, watch a movie or listen to music.
It’s is important that you are fit and healthy when you take the
tests, so eat sensibly and get enough sleep.
Attend a course or revise with a
friend to practice talking and help with the more difficult questions.
DURING THE EXAM
Guidelines on examination etiquette
Do’s
- Provide a valid national
identity card and your Statement of Entry for each paper you take.
- Switch off all electronic
devices and put them and any other learning materials where the supervisor
will tell you.
- Only keep pens, pencils an
eraser on the desk.
- Make sure you are on time. If
you arrive late and are admitted, not all of your work may be accepted.
- Listen to the supervisor and
read the instructions carefully.
- If you have the wrong exam
papers or it is incomplete or poorly printed, tell the invigilator.
- Use a pencil to write your
answers on the answer sheet.
- Make a clear pencil mark inside
the box (A, B, C, D) Don’t
put a circle or a cross because the machine can’t read it! If you want to change the
answers, rub out the wrong one first. Don’t
use correction fluid!
Don’ts
· Don’t make any attempt to cheat, copy or use a
dictionary.
· Don’t talk during the examination or disturb
the other examinees during the paper.
· Don’t smoke or eat. Candidates are allowed to
drink plain water from a plastic bottle with a secure lid.
· Don’t ask for explanations.
· Don’t leave the room without permission.
TASK TYPES
Candidates are required to solve a wide variety of tasks to
prove their language abilities:
- to use general interactional and social
lamguage
- to listen for specific information, to focus
on detail and state opinion.
- to listen for and state purpose, opinion,
relationship, agreement etc.
- to give advice, be able to compare, describe,
explain, justify and recommend
- to respond grammatically correct, using the
appropriate degree of formality according to the situation
- to exemplify, structure ideas in a coherent
text, follow the development of a long text

Different written and listening materials are provided to the
examinees to use or produce: advertisements, excerpts from letters and emails,
articles, essays, reports, reviews, stories.
